In the 50’s the Chapter devoted its community service efforts to Flanner House and the Morgan Health Center and focused on the needs of black children in the area. The Chapter also sponsored yearly health fairs and counseled families on nutrition and immunizations. Fast forward to recent times. In ’83 the Chapter sponsored the first annual Links “Celebrity Barbeque and Grille,” now our signature event, celebrating minority achievement. Over the next 30 years, this event generated nearly $300,000 which was then donated to the Chapter’s community commitments. In ’85, at the invitation of the Indiana Historical Society, the Chapter sponsored an exhibit called “Bury me in a Free Land.” The exhibit focused on Indiana’s role in the abolitionist movement. In ’94 the Chapter partnered with Arsenal Technical High School and began a four-year program with 36 girls who were exposed to everything from a mentoring program to classes in reading for literacy, music and art appreciation, etiquette, fashion, college and career counseling, and cultural field trips.
