Indiana Bicentennial Celebration 2016
History of the Michigan Road in Carroll County, 2nd ed.
The first edition of this book was published by Lee Appleton in 2013 after the Indiana Dept. of Transportation designated the entire state route as the Historic Michigan Road Byway in 2011. Michigan Road, the first north-south highway, made possible the settlement of most of the State of Indiana. This authoritative history is based on previous published and unpublished research, as well as review of original documents, many newspaper articles, two theses, and photograph collections. The short book includes many details covering the road’s history from the beginning to the present and showcases many photographs taken along the road during its long history.

What do you consider the key accomplishment of your Legacy Project?
- The first edition of the book was prepared during the statewide application to INDOT for Byway status. The greatly expanded edition was created for the Bicentennial to increase interest and knowledge of the Byway. I don't know of another county that has created such a record. The book is completed but not yet delivered for distribution.
How/where are you preserving information and artifacts related to your Legacy Project?
- Files on Michigan Road history will ultimately be held at Plymouth in Marshall County at the Crossroads Center of the Historical Society.
