Chlamydia/Gonorrhea Testing
Chlamydia/Gonorrhea specimen collection and transport.
There is no cost for this testing.
Acceptable specimens:
- Urine, minimum 1mL
- Use Aptima Combo 2 Assay Urine Specimen Collection Kit; fill to volume range indicated on tube.
- Endocervical, urethral, or rectal swab
- Use Aptima Combo 2 Assay Unisex Swab Specimen Collection Kit: one swab per collection tube.
- Vaginal or rectal swab
- Use Aptima Combo 2 Assay Multitest Swab Specimen Collection Kit: one swab per collection tube.
- Rectal, endocervical, and penile urethra specimens for CT/GC testing must be collected by a clinician. Patient-collected rectal, endocervical, and penile urethral specimens are not acceptable.
- Urine and vaginal specimens may be patient-collected.
- LimsNet submissions for chlamydia and gonorrhea (CT/GC) will require selection of “patient-collected” or “clinician-collected” as part of the specimen submission form.
Specimens may be stored refrigerated or at room temperature; 2°-30°C.
Urine must arrive at the lab within 30 days of collection.
Swabs must arrive at the lab within 60 days of collection.
- Appropriate specimen collection kit.
- Plastic sleeve for each specimen, provided by IDOH when ordering collection kits.
- Shipping boxes or containers with appropriate shipping labels.
- UN3373 Biological Substances, Category B shipping container
- 13A shipping container provided by IDOH
- Access to LimsNet online account for entry submission.
- Please note the “Specimen Requirements” tab.
- Properly label the specimen tube with the patient’s full legal name, date of birth, and date of collection.
- Check the expiration date on the tube to ensure product is acceptable and will continue to be acceptable once received at the IDOH Laboratory.
- Urine and swab specimen must be kept at 2°-30°C. Swab specimens must be tested within 60 days of collection. Urine specimens must be tested within 30 days of collection. If longer storage is required, freeze specimen at -70°C for up to 90 days.

- Put labeled specimen in the plastic sleeve and place in the inner shipping canister lined with absorbent material.
- Place the inner shipping canister and LimsNet submission cover page into the outer shipping canister. Cover sheet can also be placed in a separate plastic bag.
- Outer canister (and coversheet bag, if separate) is placed in an appropriate UN3373 Biological Substances shipping package.

Laboratory reports will be sent out via LimsNet and will be available within five business days upon receipt at the Lab.
