Overview
Identity thieves hunt for sensitive personal information—like passwords, Social Security numbers, and bank account details. They use this data to commit crimes and steal money. And victims often face lowered credit scores, making it harder to get loans, secure mortgages, sign rental agreements, or get new credit cards.
Identity thieves can also file fake tax returns and steal children’s identities to gain access to clean credit histories to open lines of credit in their names.
The Indiana Department of Revenue uses an ID confirmation process to help Indiana taxpayers protect their information.
ID passcode confirmation
If you get an ID Passcode Confirmation letter from DOR, you must complete the steps to verify your identify before your return can be processed and refund deposited. You have three attempts prior to the deadline in your letter.
First, make sure the name(s) and address at the top of the letter match the Indiana income tax return you filed. This first name is the primary taxpayer, and the second is the spouse. If there are errors on this section, call 317-232-3425 (option 1), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. ET for help. If you did not file an Indiana return, complete the ID passcode confirmation process to indicate you did not file.
If you received a letter from DOR to complete an ID Passcode or ID DOC Request, you will need to make sure the name(s) and address information at the top of the letter matches an Indiana income tax return you recently filed. If the information is not accurate, you may call DOR at 317-232-3425, Option 1, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m. ET for assistance.
Otherwise, you will only need to complete a simple Identity Confirmation Process which will help to protect your refund and identity. Once the identity confirmation process is complete, DOR will be able to continue processing your return. You should allow up to three weeks to receive your refund.
