Producers must also consider other animal contact. Areas of concern are the fence line, exhibitions (shows/fairs), stray animals, shared hospital and maternity pens and contact between different age groups. Since eliminating animal contact is impossible producers must pay close attention to the control points in these areas.
Control Points
To control disease exposure via animal-to-animal contact:
Minimize animal contact between groups such as breeders, weaned animals, show stock, etc.
Treat animals returning from shows as new herd additions. Follow quarantine and observation protocols.
Minimize contact with non-resident animals (fence-line contact with other animals including neighboring operations and wildlife).
Consider double fencing for very high value animals at risk of contact.
