What to Do with Expired License Plates

The Indiana BMV does not require unused or expired plates to be surrendered to the BMV. You are responsible for properly destroying and disposing of plates that are no longer registered. To properly destroy a plate, the BMV recommends the plate be cut into pieces, shredded, damaged, or defaced in a way that makes it permanently unreadable and dispose of it in the trash.
