License Plates Overview
The BMV has many license plate designs. Some honor history, others support the military and their families. There are also plates that help schools and local groups, and plates made for certain kinds of vehicles.
License Plate Fees & Taxes
When you purchase or renew any Indiana license plate, you'll pay registration fees and taxes. The amount depends on the year and make of your vehicle, as well as where you live. If you purchase or renew a Special Group Recognition (SGR) license plate, you may pay additional fees determined by the organization sponsoring the plate. Indiana Has Released Its Blackout Plate
Elevate your vehicle's look with the Indiana Blackout license plate! Because similar designs are popular in other states and Indiana residents have shown strong interest, the BMV is excited to offer a new license plate featuring white letters on a black background.
Starting August 8, 2025, this plate will be available for an additional fee of $45 and may be personalized for an additional $45 (these fees will be due upon initial registrations and all subsequent annual renewals.) You don’t need to wait for your current registration to expire to buy a Blackout plate. However, you MUST visit a BMV branch to complete the purchase. A $9.50 replacement plate fee will be assessed along with $45 for the plate.
Blackout plates may also be purchased online via myBMV.com or at a kiosk ONLY during a new registration or renewal transaction. More information can be found on the Blackout Plate FAQ sheet.
