The Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) celebrated National Adoption Month in November! This month highlighted the families who have permanently welcomed children into their lives through adoption and the children still seeking secure, forever families.
On Oct. 31, Governor Mike Braun signed the official proclamation for National Adoption Month with three adoptive families. These families talked about the importance of adoption when they met with Governor Braun and DCS Director Adam Krupp. For photos of the event, click here.
Throughout the month, local DCS offices and county courthouses held a variety of events to finalize adoptions, promote adoption and celebrate the children, with whom case managers had closely worked with, as they joined a new family.
On DCS’s Instagram, X and LinkedIn, you can find children’s stories, highlighted families and resources related to adoption that you can share with others in your life. You should spread awareness of the need for adoption year-round. No matter the month, Indiana children need loving, supportive homes. Research has shown that adoption helps many children achieve better outcomes in life by providing them with a solid foundation for growth.
Last year, 1,568 youth were adopted in Indiana. By September of this year, there were 1,278 children adopted, 191 more than had been adopted by September 2024. 181 children were adopted this November as families finalized their adoptions during this special month.
Adoption is one avenue of providing permanency for children as part of DCS’ vision, “Every child in Indiana thrives in a safe, loving forever home.” Currently, over 190 children in Indiana are waiting for placement in an adoptive home. Even if your family’s plans don’t include adoption, you still have the power to help spread awareness of waiting children.
