Introduction
AmeriCorps is a network of local, state, and national service programs that connects over 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet community needs in six key areas: disaster services, economic opportunity, education, environmental stewardship, healthy futures, and veterans and military families. AmeriCorps’ members serve with more than 15,000 non-profits, public agencies, and community organizations.
AmeriCorps’ consists of three programs in which applicants may enroll: (1) VISTA; (2) NCCC; and (3) AmeriCorps State and National. For additional information on these three programs click here.
AmeriCorps members serve full-time or part-time over a period of 3-12 months depending on their program model. On average, full-time members will serve 40 hours a week during the course of the program year, and part-time members will serve between 10-20 hours depending on the parameters of their program. AmeriCorps is open to U.S. citizens, nationals, or lawful permanent resident aliens. Age restrictions vary by program. AmeriCorps members must be at least 17 years of age, but AmeriCorps*VISTA and AmeriCorps*NCCC require that you are at least 18 years of age.
Benefits of Becoming an AmeriCorps Member
There are many benefits to becoming an AmeriCorps member including training, participation in meeting needs in the community, and developing job skills.
During their term of service, full-time members receive a modest living allowance. For the 2024-2025 program year, the minimum living allowance for full-time members is $18,700 and exact amount above that figure is different for each program.
In addition to the living allowance, all members who successfully complete a term of service receive a Segal Education Award (valued at $7,395 for full-time members). The education award may be used to assist with college or graduate school costs or to repay qualified student loans. Furthermore, members with qualifying student loans are eligible for student loan deferment during their term of service. For more information regarding the Segal Education Award, please click here.

Facts about AmeriCorps
AmeriCorps members serve at a variety of nonprofit organizations throughout Indiana. Members are not called “employees” or “volunteers” because members serve. They are also part of a community and the term “member” is a reminder of that connection.
