Lance D. Hamner
Lance D. Hamner was elected Johnson County Prosecutor in 2022. He previously served as Prosecutor from 1991 to 2009. He was elected judge of Johnson Superior Court No. 3 in 2008 and served as judge from 2009 to 2022. Lance resigned from the bench the day before the filing deadline to run for Prosecutor again in 2022. He is one of only a few Indiana judges to leave the bench to run for prosecutor. Lance has also been a Marion County deputy prosecutor and a litigation attorney at Barnes & Thornburg, Indianapolis.
Lance graduated from Indiana University School of Law (Bloomington), J.D. magna cum laude and Weber State University, B.S., summa cum laude (Criminal Justice). In law school he was on the Indiana Law Journal, selected for Board of Editors and served as editorial staff. He was inducted into the Order of the Coif.
Lance has tried cases from traffic infractions to capital homicide. He has been featured on many national TV shows including Forensic Files, Murdered by Morning, Murder Comes to Town, Inside Edition, Larry King Live, and Montel Williams.
Lance has been adjunct professor of law at Indiana University School of law, Bloomington where he taught Trial Advocacy. He is the author of nine editions of the Indiana Arrest, Search & Seizure Courtroom Manual (Tower Publishing). He has taught in the areas of Fourth and Fifth Amendment law at many colleges, police academies, and continuing legal education seminars in Indiana and in other parts of the country.
Prior to his attending law school Lance served for five years as a police officer in West Jordan, Utah. He was valedictorian of 80th Session of the Utah Police Academy and set the academy record for highest ever cumulative scores. He was a motorcycle officer, a member of the SWAT Team, and the Physical Training Specialist.
Lance is a member of the American Law Institute (ALI).
