Graduate Engineer Development Program

This page provides information on the GEDP program, like requirements, rotations, benefits, and where to go with questions about the program.

INDOT's Graduate Development Program (GEDP)

GEDP is a one-year Indianapolis-based rotational program that focuses on developing technical problem-solving and leadership skills. Engineers will spend time in each of INDOT’s engineering departments and upon completion of the program, will transition into their choice of assignment at INDOT; based on availability of positions, supervisor assessments, and the engineer’s preference. The goal of the GEDP is to support the engineer’s ability to learn as much about on-the-job civil engineering as possible, as well as fostering professional development and connecting the engineer with INDOT’s wide network of civil engineering professionals. The GEDP is designed for INDOT’s future leaders.

We’re looking for entry-level civil engineers who aren’t done learning, who want to start their career by contributing to the bigger picture. Does that sound like you? If so, we’re looking for you!

Testimonials

  • Meagan Froman – Hydraulics Engineer

"There are so many great opportunities that come with participating in the GEDP. Take advantage of them!!! You’ll get the opportunity to meet and network with a huge amount of people throughout the state (both INDOT and non-INDOT people) and see and learn about engineering-related things you wouldn’t get the opportunity to see and learn about otherwise. Also, take the time to get to know your coworkers. They become your work family, and you can gain some lifelong friends!"

  • Nathan Shellhamer – Construction Engineer

"As a GEDP, you have the ability to explore INDOT for an entire year. Push the limits and think of things you want to see that aren't exactly listed in the agenda. Some of the most fun and best learning opportunities came from things my GEDP group visited that weren't originally part of the rotation schedule."

  • Ethan Price – Design Engineer

"I had the opportunity to explore all parts of INDOT and network with hundreds of different employees. The GEDP allowed me to try different career paths that I never thought I would have previously picked. It proved that school is a lot different than the real world and not to rule something out just because it wasn’t your favorite topic in college."

  • Cristy Burlage – Bridge Inspection Engineer

"Everyone was very willing to teach me something, everyone tried their best to give the best quality experience with their department. INDOT employees are really the nicest and most helpful for those just coming from school. The support from everyone at INDOT is very welcoming and comforting going through this year."
