The Indiana State Archives has many online resources to help you get started with your research:
Research Indiana Indexes
The Research Indiana Indexes is a searchable database of over 1.5 million personal names and business entities. This tool is perfect for genealogists and historians looking for specific Hoosiers found in our large collections of records. Completed indexing project descriptions are available. The Research Indiana Indexes is updated regularly as projects are completed, so visit often.
Research Indiana Catalog
The catalog provides researchers with access to descriptive entries of the vast holdings of the Indiana State Archives. Searching the catalog is ideal for researchers wanting to browse our holdings or see what types of records might answer your research question. Search results include each type of record found at the Archives. Click on a search result to see all of the boxes, volumes, or microfilm reels in that record type.
Hoping to search each individual container in the Archives' stacks? (There are more than 200,000!) From the catalog page, click the Home tab and then choose the Containers option. Don't forget to use the filters on the left to narrow your search.
Research Indiana Finding Aids
Browse our digital and digitized finding aids for in-depth collection guides. This tool is excellent for researchers interested in an individual record series or entity or those wanting to gain a greater understanding of the range of collections available at the Archives. Finding aids often contain overviews, administrative histories, and even inventories of archival holdings. Many digitized finding aids, available as PDFs, were created years ago and may contain outdated information. These materials are intended to assist users at the beginning of their research.
