Vigo County in the War of 1812

The Vigo County, Indiana, War of 1812 Bicentennial Committee is committed to the presentation of informative public events in observance of the conflict’s 200th anniversary.  This site is regularly updated and provides links to War of 1812 groups, local and regional events, and research.  Provides K-12 curriculum materials.

Harrison and Tecumseh: Final Decision in the Old Northwest (Symposia Series)

This website has been made available by the City of Vincennes 1812 Commission. It provides much historical information about events in Indiana and their relationship to the War of 1812.  Part of the commemoration is a series of symposia—a collaborative effort with University of Southern Indiana, Historic Southern Indiana, Vincennes University, and the Vincennes 1812 Commission.

The most recent symposium, "1812: Harrison Takes Command," was held on June 30, 2012.

National Center for Great Lakes Native American Culture Academic Conference

The 2012 Conference focuses on Eastern Woodlands Tribes in the War of 1812.

Historic Sites and Events

Grouseland Foundation, Vincennes

Grouseland, the Indiana territorial mansion of William Henry Harrison, Indiana Territorial Governor, is a Presidential Home and National Historic Site maintained by the Foundation. The Foundation is commemorating the activities that took place at Grouseland, leading up to the Battle of Tippecanoe.  On August 21, 2010, the Foundation commemorated the 1810 Vincennes meeting of William Henry Harrison and Tecumseh and dedicated the Walnut Grove Park.  On July 23, 2011, there was a commemoration of the second meeting between Harrison and Tecumseh; there was a dedication ceremony for an Indiana State Historical Marker commemorating both meetings.

The Tippecanoe Battlefield (Battle of Tippecanoe, November 7, 1811)

The Tippecanoe Battlefield, a National Historic Landmark, is seven miles north of Lafayette, Indiana. It is managed by the Tippecanoe County Historical Association.  The Tippecanoe Battlefield Commemoration took place November 5-7, 2011.  A museum on site displays period artifacts.

Historic Fort Wayne

Replica fort hosts living history events and tours.  The 200th anniversary of the Siege of Fort Wayne will be commemorated September 8-9, 2012.

The Battle of the Mississinewa, December 18, 1812

Mississinewa 1812 is the largest War of 1812 living history event in the United States.  Sponsored by the Mississinewa Battlefield Society Inc, Marion, Indiana with the support of the Department of Natural Resources.  It is a historical commemoration of the Battle of  Mississinewa fought there on December 17-18, 1812.  The website provides links to additional resources.

Battlefields to Burial Grounds

A report by the Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, which records Indiana’s Cultural Resources from the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.
