We had the pleasure of attending the 2014 Historic Preservation Conference, held in historic New Albany, Indiana. Bordering Kentucky, the town boasts a rich history, beautiful buildings and numerous enlightening markers.
Our mobile bookshop offered participants books related to preservation, conservation, general and southern Indiana history, and the Underground Railroad. We also took the opportunity to speak with attendees and speakers about our marker program and survey, and look forward to working with them on new projects. Our own Jill Weiss spoke about interpreting African American history when no structures exist. Check out her Prezi.
After a busy day of selling books and speaking with others in the field, we took a trip aboard the gorgeous steamboat the Belle of Louisville and enjoyed a catered dinner and picturesque view of the Ohio River. We also had the chance to check out some of the local fare at The Exchange and the Dragon Kings Daughter. The conference was capped off by a gourmet spread at the celebrated Calumet Club, where participants were fortunate enough to hear Nancy Hiller speak about her cabinetry and preservation efforts.
Preservation junkies will be interested to know that we carry several conference books in our shop, notably Hiller’s The Hoosier Cabinet in Kitchen History, A Home of Her Own and Historic Preservation in Indiana. Visit our online shop or contact Bookshop Manager, Nicole Poletika, at npoletika@history.in.gov for more information about our book selection and/or ordering.
Join us at next year’s conference in Kokomo, Indiana, on April 21-24, 2015. See you then!
