Large-Scale Digital Maps

This series, created to provide e-products (such as GIS coverages) for quick release, may include:

  • maps and digital coverage of bedrock surface topography and thickness of unconsolidated deposits at a scale of 1:24,000
  • maps showing potential yield of unconsolidated aquifers
  • maps showing water levels of unconsolidated and bedrock aquifers
  • hydrogeologic cross sections showing thickness and extent of unconsolidated and bedrock aquifers

General Description of Metadata & Disclaimer Statement

Bedrock Surface

This file is a digital geospatial line coverage of bedrock-surface topography for Boone County, Indiana. The mapping was conducted at 1:24,000 scale using the water well records, oil and gas records, seismic data, and previously published reports and maps of the region. This coverage has been overlain on 1:24,000 scale USGS Digital Raster Quadrangles (quads) to create functional maps for each individual quad in a .pdf format. Coverages are also available for the complete county, but the base map is a planimetric showing major roads, city boundaries, and township-range-section lines. The primary attribute is the elevation of the bedrock surface. Metadata.

Unconsolidated Thickness

This file is a digital geospatial line coverage of the thickness of unconsolidated deposits in Boone County, Indiana. The mapping was conducted at 1:24,000 scale using USGS hypsography (land surface contours) digital line graph coverages and a digital geospatial line coverage of bedrock-surface topography for the West Fork of the White River Basin in Indiana. The two coverages were converted into ArcInfo Triangulated Irregular Networks (TIN), a product of ESRI. These TINs were then converted into 10-meter grids and the latter subtracted from the former to produce the unconsolidated thickness grid. The resulting grid was then filtered using a low pass filter with 25 iterations to produce smoother lines when contoured. The new grid was contoured in ArcInfo using lattice contour with a 25-foot interval. This coverage has been overlain on 1:24,000 scale USGS Digital Raster Quadrangles (quads) to create functional maps for each individual quad in a .pdf format. Coverages are also available for the complete county, but the base map is a planimetric showing major roads, city boundaries, and township-range-section lines. The primary attribute is the thickness of the unconsolidated deposits. Metadata.

Public Land Survey System

This coverage is basically a grid that is used with the county-scale maps. It shows the outlines and numbers of all Congressional Land Survey sections, townships, and ranges within the county. It was created by the Indiana Geological Survey, who digitized the appropriate lines on 1:24,000 scale topographic maps. Metadata not available.

Potential Yield of Unconsolidated Aquifers

This coverage is a map that portrays the range of probable maximum yields to be expected from individual wells, assuming they are large diameter, properly constructed, and penetrate the full thickness of the aquifer. The map was created by analyzing data from several thousand water well records and reviewing several published geologic and ground-water maps and reports for the state and Hendricks County. Especially acknowledged is the unconsolidated aquifer systems map from Water Resource Assessment 2002-6, Division of Water, 2002 (in preparation). Metadata not available.

Water Levels for Unconsolidated Aquifers

This file depicts the elevation to which water levels will rise in wells completed in unconsolidated aquifers. The map was created by plotting elevations of the static water levels at 1:24,000 scale and then generating contours or lines of equal elevation. However, this is a generalized map. Because of the seasonal nature of water levels, the inherent variability in accuracy of the raw data, and other factors, the water level at any specific point may not match that shown on the map. Cross Section

This cross section is a generalized representation of the thickness, depth, and extent of geologic materials across Hendricks County along U.S. 36. Potential sand and gravel aquifers are shown as well as the major bedrock aquifer systems. The cross section was generated by plotting and correlating lithologic data from selected records of water wells within one-fourth mile of U.S. 36. Original plotting was done at a horizontal scale of 1 inch equals 2000 feet using 1:24,000 scale topographic maps for land surface elevations. Because of the inherent variability in accuracy of the raw data and the data selection process, the actual thickness and depth of geologic materials at any specific point may not match interpretations shown on the cross section.
