Conduct Child Welfare Research

child welfare researchDCS Research and Data

DCS reviews research and data requests carefully to protect children, families and their privacy. There are several laws that govern confidentiality and data protections including: IC 4-1-6, IC 4-1-10, IC 4-1-11, IC 5-14-3-6.5, and IC 24-4.9.

Research Involving Information from Families, Children or DCS Staff

If your study involves gathering information about or from our families, children or staff, you must complete the Application for Child Abuse Research Form. This form helps us protect potential research subjects and assess the merits of the proposed research.

Please note: Submitting the application does not guarantee DCS participation. Proof of Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval may also be required.

Research Involving Data

If you want to obtain data rather than access to research subjects, you will also need to fill out an additional form, the DCS Data Request Form. Data requests will be reviewed by DCS' Data Release Committee.

Please note: If the request is approved, the process for obtaining data may take several months.
