What to expect at your appointment

The library is a special collection, and judicial branch employees are bound by a code of conduct which prevents the library from operating in a manner similar to a public library or assisting customers like a reference librarian might. Before requesting an in-person appointment, consider whether online services meet your needs and review these policies.

When visiting the library in person, Court staff can:

  • Direct you to materials when you have a specific title, reference, citation, or court rule (including U.S. Government information through Title 44, Section 1911 as a Federal Depository Library)
  • Provide you with free copying of library materials only
  • Direct you to the two library computers which provide access to Westlaw, the LexisNexis Digital Library, HeinOnline, and VitalLaw. Users are required to comply with the Supreme Court Acceptable Standard Use Policy
  • Provide free public Wi-Fi, which also requires compliance with the Acceptable Standard Use Policy. Staff cannot assist you with technical support on personal electronic devices.

Please note the following policies as well:

  • Court staff cannot do research or interpret the meaning of statutes, cases, or regulations
  • Court staff cannot offer any legal advice or help litigants with court cases, including filling out forms. If you need legal assistance, visit indianalegalhelp.org
  • Library materials (such as books) cannot be physically checked out. Try searching the library catalog in advance to see what materials may be available. And note you may be able to digitally review items without coming to the library
  • Guests will be required to sign in and sign out as well as show ID
  • Guests must place handled books on the marked reshelving cart
  • The library is not responsible for any personal belongings
  • Computers are for legal research purposes only
  • The Court retains the right to ask guests to leave the library and prevent them from future visits if improper behavior is observed, including sleeping, loitering, obscene language, other disrespectful actions, or violations of library policies

No exceptions to the policies will be made unless a request has been made to and approved by the Court's ADA Coordinator.
