Application & Instructions

In 2024, the Marion County Judicial Selection Committee (MCJSC) will fulfill its statutory duty to make public recommendations to voters concerning the retention of Marion Superior Court judges. To stand for retention (approval or rejection by Marion County voters) in the 2024 General Election, incumbent judges in retention class A must submit an application to the committee.

Application materials may be submitted beginning Wednesday, January 10, 2024, and must be received no later than noon on Friday, February 9, 2024. 

Incumbents should prepare their application materials to be submitted electronically through the Indiana Courts Portal using the "Upload a document feature." If you are not sure how to sign in, see the help topic on signing in or creating an account. Please sign into the portal well in advance of submitting your application in case you need assistance with your login or password. Do not wait until the final submission day to sign into the portal.

Applications of candidates for judicial appointment are public records.

Eligibility

To be qualified to serve as a judge of the Marion Superior Court, a person must be a resident of Marion County (at the time of application and throughout the term of office) and be an attorney admitted to the bar of Indiana for at least five years. Ind. Code ยง 33-33-49-6.

Instructions for electronic application

The electronic copy of your application must be submitted through the Indiana Courts Portal by the deadline above. To apply for the position, you should submit five files through the Indiana Courts Portal using the "Upload a document" feature. Files must not exceed 15mb in size.

On or after January 10 and before noon on February 9, sign into the Indiana Courts Portal at portal.courts.in.gov. From the dashboard, in the section labeled "My Tools & Settings" click "Upload a document."

1 - Application for Marion Superior Court 

  • Once completed, save as a PDF. Do not print and scan this document.
  • From the Secure Document Uploader, select the document type "Marion Incumbent - Application"

2 - Waiver, Release & Consent

  • The Waiver, Release & Consent requires a signature. Print, sign, and scan this file as a PDF.
  • From the Secure Document Uploader, select the document type "Marion Incumbent - Waiver"

3 - Statement of Economic Interests

  • The Statement of Economic Interests may require additional pages. Combine the completed form and additional pages into a single PDF file.
  • From the Secure Document Uploader, select the document type "Marion Incumbent - SEI"

4 - Supplemental materials (outlined in the checklist above)

  • Combine additional materials to submit with your application into a single PDF file. If the file exceeds 15mb, try compressing it or splitting into multiple parts.
  • From the Secure Document Uploader, select the document type "Marion Incumbent - Attachment"

Interviews

For incumbent judges in retention class A, and who have never appeared before the Committee for retention purposes, the committee will conduct 20-minute interviews during an executive session on Friday, March 15, 2024. Later, in a session open to the public, the committee will vote on the recommendations for each judge. A press release will then be distributed containing the recommendations regarding your qualifications and suitability to continue holding judicial office. See I.C. 33-33-49-13.7(c)-(h).

For incumbent judges in retention class A who have previously appeared before the Committee for retention purposes, a date for interviews has yet to be scheduled.
