The Indiana Probation Standards require that all certified probation officers complete at least 12 hours of continuing education credit annually, with at least 6 hours on evidence-based practices in community supervision (Standard 2.3). The chief probation officer and the supervising judge shall approve all course content eligible to comply with the twelve-hour requirement. All educational conferences and meetings sponsored by the Indiana Office of Court Services must be given credit, as well as any other training approved by the probation officer’s supervising judge.
In addition to educational sessions offered by the Indiana Office of Court Services, a probation officer can meet his/her training responsibilities by attending sessions offered by outside organizations such as the Probation Officers Professional Association of Indiana (POPAI), the American Probation and Parole Association (APPA), the National Institute of Corrections (NIC), and other criminal justice partners.
