What is a Duplicate Title?
A duplicate title is obtained when the original title has been lost, stolen, mutilated, destroyed, or becomes illegible. The duplicate title is printed with the word “DUPLICATE” on its face. When a duplicate title is issued, the original title becomes void. In the event the original title is located, destroy it to ensure it is not used in the sale or transfer of ownership of the vehicle.
When purchasing a duplicate title, you must provide an unexpired photo ID (e.g., driver's license, state-issued ID, school, military, bank card, passport, probation card, work ID, membership card).
Ways to Purchase a Duplicate Title
- Online at myBMV.com - simply log into your myBMV.com account and head to the Titles section of the site.
- At any BMV branch - find your local branch and present your photo ID to request a duplicate title. It's also helpful to have the vehicle's VIN.
- At any BMV Connect kiosk - visit any BMV kiosk, scan your ID, and select Duplicate Title from the screen options.
- Visit a Partial Service Provider (PSP) - visit one of BMV's PSPs and present your photo ID to request a duplicate title.
- By U.S. Mail - submit the following via U.S. Mail:
- A completed Application for Certificate of Title For A Vehicle - State Form 205 or a completed Application for Certificate of Watercraft Title – State Form 38529, and
- An unexpired photo ID, and
- A lien release if applicable, and
- A check, cashier’s check or money order payable to BMV in the amount of $15.00 (add $25 for a speed title), or a completed Collection of Payment Form (BMV)–State Form 56163

Titles with Liens
Duplicate title transactions cannot change any information (owners or liens). If you are trying to obtain a title without the lien, you will need to process an amendment.
Please note, duplicate title transactions are unable to be processed on an electronic title.
