According to Punxsutawney Phil, spring is less than six weeks away…which means motorcycle season is right around the corner! Before you take your motorcycle out of hibernation, make sure you have the proper insurance, registration, training and licensure. Train smart - ride smart with our helpful pre-season checklist.
Insurance
The State of Indiana requires motorcyclists to carry liability insurance. It’s important to ask your insurance agent about obtaining coverage for you and your motorcycle including comprehensive, collision, medical payments, uninsured driver and more. Keep in mind that insurance companies base their rates on:
- Coverage location
- Age
- Driving history
- Size and type of motorcycle
Registration
Before taking your motorcycle out on the road, you are required to register and obtain plates for your new ride. To register your motorcycle, visit your local BMV branch with your title or certificate of ownership from your financial institution.

Training
Although not required, Ride Safe Indiana (RSI) recommends you take an Entry Level Motorcycle Safety Course to obtain your motorcycle endorsement. Our three-day Entry Level Motorcycle Safety Course includes:
- Classroom instruction
- Practical riding experience in a controlled, off-street setting
- Knowledge exam and riding-skill evaluation at conclusion of course
RSI providers offer both two-wheel and three-wheel entry level motorcycle safety courses as well as advanced motorcycle training courses for riders with more than 6,000 miles of experience.
Motorcycle Endorsement
Hoosier motorcyclists are legally required to have a motorcycle endorsement in order to operate a motorcycle. Indiana residents who hold a valid Indiana driver’s license may obtain a motorcycle endorsement by completing one of the following options:
- Successfully complete an Entry Level Motorcycle Safety Course with an authorized RSI provider
- OR -
- Successfully complete a written knowledge exam at a BMV branch AND pass a motorcycle skills exam at an authorized RSI training location
