In October 2013, Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) is received IURC approval to install new pollution control equipment at its electric generating stations to reduce mercury and particulate matter emissions. The utility also received approval to recover the construction costs through electric rates, with rate adjustments being requested every six months.

In filings, NIPSCO stated that it sought the plan to comply with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) Utility Mercury and Air Toxics Standard (MATS) rule. NIPSCO estimated the compliance plan's capital costs at approximately $59 million.
