The Wednesday Word: News from the Indiana State Library

Several invaluable collections of historical materials were recently added to Indiana Memory – the digital gateway to Indiana’s history and cultural heritage. These collections contain rare maps, photos, manuscripts and publications that offer unique glimpses of Indiana throughout history. Most notable of these new collections include:

The Indiana State Library Map Collection – This collection of county maps reveal Indiana’s network of roads in each county during the first half of the twentieth century. The Indiana Highway Survey maps were created in 1936 and reveal information about county roads on one map and the built landscape (i.e. dwellings, churches, schools, and cemeteries) on a second map. The United States Post Office maps show the rural delivery routes in each county around 1910.

Monroe County At War and At Home – This collection of the Monroe County Public Library details what Bloomington and Monroe County were like before, during, and after the Civil War. With only one surviving issue of the local newspaper from that era and many personal narratives either lost or scattered, this collection brings together an assortment of original materials that remain for all to share and study.

Indiana Memory is a gateway to Indiana's history and culture found in digitized books, manuscripts, photographs, newspapers, maps, and other media. As a portal to the collections, it assists individuals to locate materials relevant to their interests and to better appreciate the connections between those materials. The program has been made possible through the collaborative efforts of academic libraries, public libraries, historical societies, museums, and archives to create, share and provide access to the wealth of primary sources within their digital collections. Collections may be viewed individually or searched collectively at indianamemory.org

State Library Awards $50,000 in Institutional Literacy Grants

The Indiana State Library awarded grants totaling $50,000 to twelve state institutions. The institutional literacy grants facilitate improved literacy among the individuals under custody of the state. Institutions strive to meet literacy goals at multiple educational levels and may request funds for library materials that meet their specific literacy needs. Materials that are frequently borrowed through interlibrary loan may also be purchased through the institutional literacy grant program.
