Harrison County Prosecutor - J Otto Schalk

J. Otto Schalk

J. Otto Schalk assumed office on January 1, 2011 and since that time his office has prosecuted thousands of cases. He graduated from the University of Kentucky and received his J.D. from the University of Dayton.

As Prosecuting Attorney for Harrison County, J. Otto Schalk is the chief law enforcement officer for the county. He is tasked with reviewing and evaluating each and every police report that is submitted. Likewise, he is tasked with the preparation and filing of each criminal charge, and the prosecution of those criminal filings.

Prosecutor Schalk's philosophy is simple: Prevent, Protect, and Prosecute.

First, crimes must be prevented before they occur. To accomplish this, youth must be invested in to make sure they end up on the right path using new programs such as the Get ‘Em in the Classroom Campaign. Schalk firmly believes that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This includes encouraging those facing criminal charges to seek drug treatment and rehabilitation.

Moreover, a Prosecutor must protect and he finds that through having a strong partnership with the Sheriff’s office and other law enforcement officials, Harrison County is able to protect the people in the community. With the collaboration of law enforcement presence and new programs such as the Sheriff’s county-wide NASTI drug round-ups and the Crimes Against Children Task Force, protection is possible.

Finally, a Prosecutor must prosecute. Prosecutor Schalk supports aggressive tactics in prosecuting drug dealers and all those who threaten the community. Simply put, certain crimes within the community cannot be tolerated, and those who impede the safety of the community must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Harrison is a great county; one in which residents have chosen to live and raise our children. The Prosecuting Attorney, together with law enforcement, must prevent, protect, and prosecute for all those in our community, especially our families.
