About the Project
INDOT is proposing an intersection improvement project at the intersection of U.S. 35 and County Road (C.R.) 300 South in Delaware County. The project aims to address a high number of injury crashes while maintaining efficient traffic flow along the U.S. 35 corridor. Crash data from 2019 to 2021 indicate that 15 crashes occurred at this intersection, including six injury crashes. A majority of these incidents were right-angle collisions, which are often associated with higher crash severity. The intersection currently operates as a two-way stop along C.R. 300 S. with no dedicated turn lanes along U.S. 35, creating conditions that increase the risk of right-angle crashes. To address these safety concerns, the project includes a proposed single-lane roundabout at the intersection of U.S. 35 and C.R. 300 S., along with raised medians on the approaches to help guide traffic movements and improve safety. Roundabouts provide an alternative to traditional intersections on higher-speed roadways by requiring vehicles to enter the roundabout and travel counterclockwise around a central island before exiting toward their desired direction. This design reduces vehicle speeds and the number of points where vehicles cross paths, which significantly reduces the likelihood and severity of right-angle crashes while maintaining efficient traffic movement through the intersection.
