Access Your Benefits - Follow these step-by-step instructions
GI Bill benefits are another resource for Indiana Guardsmen, as these benefits can help pay for school and cover expenses for qualifying veterans and their family members. Follow these step-by-step instructions to access your Montgomery GI Bill (CH 1606) or Post-9/11 GI Bill (CH 33) benefits.
- Step 1: Obtain your NOBE (CH 1606 Only)
Contact your Unit Readiness NCO to obtain your Notice of Basic Eligibility (DD Form 2384-1). Ensure your 6-year obligation is coded in the Integrated Personnel and Pay System - Army (IPPS-A). - Step 2: Apply for your Certificate of Eligibility (COE)
Submit the application for your COE to the VA online (VA Form 22-1990).
- Step 3: Register for Classes
Enroll in an VA-approved degree or certificate program at your chosen institution.
- Step 4: Notify your School Certifying Official (SCO)
Once you receive your Certificate of Eligibility (COE) in the mail, provide a copy to your school's SCO to certify your enrollment. The SCO is usually located in the Office of the Registrar or the Financial Aid Office.
- Step 5: Monthly Enrollment Verification
For the Montgomery GI Bill (MGIB-SR, CH 1606), you must verify your attendance on the last day of every month to receive payment. There are two ways to verify:
- Verify attendance at va.gov
- Verify attendance by calling 877-823-2378
Information about your GI Bill benefits, including available programs, is at VA.gov. For questions, call 888-GIBILL-1 (888-442-4551). GI Bill programs include MGIB-SR/Chapter 1606 and Kicker, MGIB-AD/Chapter 30, Post-9/11 GI Bill/Chapter 33, and Transfer of Education Benefits (TEB). In-service members can initiate or make changes to transferred benefits at milconnect.dmdc.osd.mil/milconnect.
Those who have already transferred or are not currently serving, and need assistance with transfer issues, call 888-GIBILL-1 (888-442-4551) or Ask VA.

Chapter 1606
The Montgomery GI Bill Select Reserve (MGIB-SR) is an educational assistance program enacted by Congress on July 1, 1985, to attract high-quality women and men into the Reserve branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. Benefits include college courses, on-the-job training/apprenticeship, or work study.
Eligibility Criteria
- Six-year contract on/after July 1, 1985
- Complete any Initial Active Duty for Training (IADT) or Basic Officer Leadership Course (BOLC)
- High school diploma or equivalent
Period of Eligibility
- Starts on the date of basic eligibility, usually after completion of basic training and advanced individual training (AIT), which is annotated on the soldier’s Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE)
- Soldiers with a date of basic eligibility prior to October 1, 1992 had 10 years to use their MGIB-SR benefit
- All other soldiers with a date of basic eligibility after October 1, 1992, eligibility ends date of expiration term of service (ETS)
Chapter 30
Active Duty GI Bill
The MGIB-AD is an educational assistance program established on July 1, 1985, to encourage service members to enlist in the active services. U.S. law requires any active-duty member who meets two-year tour eligibility requirement, in-processes for MGIB-AD, and either accepts or declines the benefit. The benefit applies to college courses, on-the-job training/apprenticeships, work study or tuition assistance “top up.”
Eligibility Criteria
- Entered active duty or AGR on or after July 1, 1985
- Two years or longer active duty or AGR obligation
- Served obligated period in an “Honorable” status
- Based upon your first active-duty tour
- Contributed the full $1,200
Period of Eligibility
- Available up to 10 years after last honorable discharge; extended if mobilized
Plus Up Program
Increases Chapter 30 monthly benefit
- Must be on Active Duty to make contribution
- Maximum contribution of $600
- Every $20 contribution increases monthly payment by $5
- Full $600 contribution increases monthly payment by $150 for full-time student
- Soldiers on Active Duty will NOT receive the additional payment
Chapter 33
Post 9/11 GI Bill
Eligibility
- Served at least 90 aggregate days on Qualifying active duty orders (Title 10 or Title 32 AGR except ADOS) after September 10, 2001, and are still on active duty or
- Were honorably discharged from active duty.
- Released from active duty and placed on the retired list or temporary disability retired list
- Released from active duty for further service in a reserve component of the armed forces
- May also be eligible if honorably discharged from active duty for a service-connected disability and served at least 30 continuous days after Sept. 10, 2001.
Payments
Amount received is a percentage based on your length of active-duty service. Amounts shown represent 100% of payment tier level.
Monthly Housing Allowance
Monthly Housing Allowance (MHA) is generally the same as the military Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) for an E-5 with dependents. MHA is based on ZIP code for the school. There are some rate exceptions.
Books/Supplies Stipend
A yearly books and supplies stipend of up to $1,000 paid proportionately based on enrollment.
