Initial Application - Independent Adjuster DHS

An Independent Adjuster works on a contract basis for an insurance carrier doing direct adjudication of claims. Indiana does not require licensure for staff adjusters. If an individual is not a resident of Indiana and the individuals home state does not license Independent Adjusters, the individual may obtain the Independent Adjuster DHS (Designated Home State) license in Indiana. Home State means a state, district, or territory of the United States in which an Independent Adjuster maintains their principal place of residence or business and is licensed to act as a resident Independent Adjuster. Non-residents desiring the Independent Adjuster DHS license in Indiana must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age,
  • Be eligible to designate Indiana as the individual's home state,
  • Be determined to be trustworthy, reliable, and of good reputation,
  • Not have committed any act that is a ground for denial, suspension or revocation of a license,
  • Have successfully completed an Indiana-approved 40 hour pre-licensing education program (searchable at Sircon.com under "Lookup Education Courses..."),
  • Have successfully completed the Indiana Independent Adjuster examination (Link to Page),
  • Submit the appropriate forms, application, and nonrefundable fees for the desired license (applications may be submitted through Sircon.com, NIPR.com, or the uniform NAIC paper application).

The license fee for an Independent Adjuster DHS license is $90.00. There is also an electronic processing fee.

*Individuals holding an active Uniform Claims Certification (UCC) with the Claims and Litigation Management Alliance (CLM) are exempt from Indiana pre-licensing education and exam requirements. A copy of an individual's UCC certificate must be attached with the license application in order to receive the waiver.

License Renewal - Independent Adjuster DHS

An Independent Adjuster license is effective for a minimum of two (2) years after the date of issuance unless probated, suspended, revoked, or refused. Renewal is on the last day of the individual's birth month. The license may be renewed if all requirements for renewal are met on or before the renewal date:

  1. Satisfactorily completing a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours of Indiana-approved continuing education (CE); and
  2. Payment of a renewal fee of ninety dollars ($90). Renewal application and fee may be submitted online through either Sircon.com or NIPR.com.

Requesting an Extension to Complete CE Requirements

If an Independent Adjuster license expires, the Independent Adjuster may, within (12) months after the date of expiration, be reissued an Independent Adjuster license upon receipt by the Commissioner of:

  1. A request for reissuance as prescribed by the department,
  2. A reissuance fee of one hundred and eighty dollars ($180), and
  3. Completion of 24 hours of Indiana-approved continuing education (CE).

An Independent Adjuster who is unable to comply with the license renewal requirements may request a waiver from the renewal requirements due to either of the following:

  1. Military service,
  2. Long term medical disability, or
  3. Another extenuating circumstance determined by the Commissioner.

License Renewal Notice

IDOI may e-mail courtesy renewal reminders to the Adjuster's e-mail address on file approximately 90 days before the license is due to expire. If for some reason you do not receive a renewal notice, it is still your responsibility to renew your license. If you do not receive a notice prior to the license expiration date, you may go online to renew at either Sircon.com or NIPR.com.

The continuing education (CE) hours required must be completed prior to renewal.

Continuing Education Audits:

IDOI reserves the right to do random audits. You may not take the same course more than once in a license renewal period.

IDOI maintains a record of adjuster continuing education hours in the Sircon database. Maintaining such a record is also the responsibility of the adjuster.

Unless your records are being audited do not send your certificates to IDOI. CE providers are required to report your completion certificates with 14 days.

Public Adjuster License (If Home State Does Not License Public Adjusters)

Initial Application - Public Adjuster

A Public Adjuster renders advice or assistance to the insured in the adjustment of a claim or claims for loss or damages under any policy of insurance covering real or personal property and any person or corporation who, or which, advertises, solicits business, or holds itself out to the public as an adjuster of such claims. If an individual is not a resident of Indiana and the individuals home state does not license Public Adjusters, the individual may obtain the Public Adjuster license in Indiana. Home State means a state, district, or territory of the United States in which a Public Adjuster maintains their principal place of residence or business, and is licensed to act as a resident Public Adjuster. Non-residents desiring the Public Adjuster license in Indiana must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be a resident of a state that does not license Public Adjusters
  • Be determined to be trustworthy, reliable, and of good reputation
  • Not have committed any act that is a ground for denial, suspension or revocation of a license
  • Have successfully completed the written Public Adjuster examination (no pre-licensing education required) - Link to Exam Registration/Scheduling Instructions *Must also request a certificate to take exam prior to exam by emailing agentlicensing@idoi.in.gov. Please include your name in the email as it appears on your driver's license.*
  • Submit the appropriate forms, application, and nonrefundable fees for the desired license (applications may be submitted through Sircon.com, or the uniform NAIC paper application)
  • Proof of $10,000 surety bond for the state of Indiana not more than six (6) months old

The license fee for a non-resident Public Adjuster license is $50, unless residence is in a retaliatory state. There is a processing fee for online applications.

License Renewal - Public Adjuster

Public Adjuster licenses expire on December 31st of every year. The license may be renewed if all requirements for renewal are met on or before the renewal date:

  1. Submit renewal application (may be done online through Sircon.com) along with $50 renewal fee (or applicable retaliatory fee - see "Licensing Fees" in Licensing FAQs); and
  2. Attach surety bond continuation certificate to the renewal application.

If a Public Adjuster license expires, the Public Adjuster must complete initial application requirements.
