Fair Housing Month

ICRC Celebrates National Fair Housing Month

INDIANAPOLIS—April marks National Fair Housing Month and The Indiana Civil Rights Commission (ICRC) celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Federal Fair Housing Act with a month of events including community outreach, free training and an interactive social media campaign titled #50YearsFurther.

The goal of Fair Housing Month is to encourage, foster, and advance fair housing in communities regardless of a person's race, color, religion, sex, age, nationality, disability, and familial status. This year is particularly impactful because it celebrates just 50 years since the passage of the Federal Fair Housing Act, 50 years since the passing of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and ICRC’s 55th anniversary.

“Housing discrimination is the second highest enforcement area in our agency,” said Gregory L. Wilson, Sr., Executive Director of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission. “As the state’s enforcement agency, it’s important to bring awareness and offer some solutions to the community, and we look forward to elevating that outreach this month.”

To kick-off this commemorative month, events are as follows:

April 2-6: Remote Complaint Intake Series | Nora Branch Library |10 AM-6 PM

April 17: Movie Viewing and Discussion Panel | Indiana Historical Society | 6-7 PM

April 20: Fair Housing Foundations Continuing Legal Education Series | Terre Haute |12:30-1:30 PM | Register for FREE here.

All events are free and open to the public.

This month, ICRC will release an interactive fair housing game that takes the the user through specific race, disability, and familial status based discrimination scenarios. This exciting project is in collaboration with ICRC Staff Attorney, Caroline Ryker and Software Consultant Alexander C. Ryker.
