The Indiana Civil Rights Commission (ICRC) believes that equal access to a quality education is the first step to achieving equality in our society. That is why the ICRC is proud to be partnering with the Indiana Black Expo (IBE) to bring another education based event to this year’s 45th Annual Summer Celebration. This event, titled “Education and Relationships in the Black Community”, will be a forum focused on parental and community engagement in the education of African American youth.

Local WTLC radio personality Karen Vaughn will moderate this star-studded forum which will feature actors, authors and philanthropists Derek Luke, Stephen Bishop and Omari Hardwick, as well as ICRC Executive Director Jamal Smith.

“The ICRC is excited about the opportunity to work with IBE to bring a much needed conversation to people who need it most.  Education, in particular, has undergone more transformation in Indiana than practically any other state in the country.  It’s important that folks in the community have a good understanding of what that transformation looks like,” states Smith.

The “Education and Relationships in the Black Community” forum will take place on Saturday, July 18th in halls J and K of the Indiana Convention Center from 12:30 pm until 2:30 pm.

Registration is currently open online and is free with general admission to the Summer Celebration Convention Center exhibit halls. The first 300 people to register online will receive free general admission into the Convention Center. Registration will also be available upon arrival.
