Indianapolis - It's a unique sporting event, a game that celebrates history and the progressive movement of all people towards equal rights. The Indiana Civil Rights Commission (ICRC) and the Indianapolis Indians, in accordance with Minor League Baseball (MiLB), will host their third annual Civil Rights Game at Victory Field Friday, August 22, 2014 when the Indianapolis Indians take on Toledo at 7:15 pm.

Prior to the game, former Negro League players will be honored and watch as ICRC Executive Director Jamal L. Smith throws out the ceremonial first pitch. The Indianapolis Indians will pay tribute to the Clowns by wearing a throwback jersey.

“We are proud to host the Civil Rights Game again and make this an annual tradition,” added Smith. “It’s an honor to help continue to spread the importance Negro League Baseball had in the battle for civil rights.”

Also this year, the winner of the Student Essay Contest will be on the field for the ceremonial first pitch. The contest asks elementary schools students why they feel education is the civil rights issue of our time.
