ICRC names new Deputy Director

Indianapolis-Ms. Akia Haynes was named Deputy Director and General Counsel of the Indiana Civil Rights Commission on January 21, 2013. Prior to this position, she served as Deputy Attorney General for the Licensing Enforcement and Homeowner Protection Unit with the Indiana Attorney General’s office.

Prior to joining the Licensing Enforcement and Homeowner Protection Unit, Akia served as the Deputy Attorney General for Litigation in Civil Rights and Employment with the Indiana Attorney General’s office. In this role, she represented the State of Indiana, its agencies and officials in prosecution of Section 1983 and other constitutional actions.

Akia graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Notre Dame in 2004. Following completion of her undergraduate degree, she received a Juris Doctorate from the University of Notre Dame Law School in 2008. She is a member of the American Bar Association and the Indiana State Bar Association where she serves on the Written Publications and Legal Ethics Committees.

A native of Indianapolis, Akia enjoys staying active in her community. She has worked with the Indiana Maurer School of Law and Rebuilding the Wall as a volunteer in recent years. She has also served as an associate faculty member with the University of Phoenix.

The Indiana Civil Rights Commission enforces the Indiana civil rights laws and provides education and services to the public in an effort to ensure equal opportunity for all Hoosiers and visitors to the State of Indiana.
