American Society of Addiction Medicine Designation

In an effort to raise the standards of care for addictions providers in Indiana, the Office of Medicaid Policy and Planning is partnering with the Division of Mental Health and Addiction on an American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) level of care designation process, beginning with residential addiction treatment facilities.

To solidify this process, Indiana Medicaid has created a new provider specialty 836 (Substance Use Disorder Residential Addiction Treatment Facility within provider type 11 – Behavioral Health Provider). On July 1, 2018, all facilities seeking Medicaid reimbursement for residential SUD treatment were required to be enrolled as this new provider specialty.

ASAM designation process

Step 1: Obtain an addiction treatment services provider, regular certification and sub-acute facility certification from DMHA.

The first step in the process is to be certified as an addiction treatment services provider, regular certification and residential certification and residential sub-acute facility by DMHA. Facilities licensed as Department of Child Services child care institutions or private secure care institutions need to have addiction treatment services provider, regular certification, not sub-acute facility certification. Step 2: Obtain an ASAM designation from DMHA.

After obtaining the required certifications from DMHA, each facility will need to apply for ASAM designation from DMHA. DMHA will provide a designation indicating approval of offering ASAM Level 3.1 or Level 3.5 residential services. Click here to complete the application for ASAM designation.

Step 3: Enroll as a Medicaid provider/add provider type and specialty.

After you have received your certification as an addiction treatment services provider, regular certification and residential sub-acute facility with your ASAM designation, the last step is being enrolled as a Medicaid provider with the provider type 11 (Behavioral Health Provider) and provider specialty 836 (SUD residential addiction treatment facility).
