Blind and Visually Impaired Services (BVIS)

Computers and other technology have opened the door to a world of possibilities for persons who are blind or visually impaired. Adaptive Technology is being used to create job opportunities and to enhance independence. The Adaptive Technology Lab is a state-of-the-art computer lab that is specifically designed to expose and teach blind and visually impaired individuals in the use of adaptive equipment.

The Lab is designed for customers of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, as well as individuals who work with blind or visually impaired persons, or any individual who has an interest in adaptive technology.

Services the Lab offers include:

  • Computer and CCTV Assessments
  • Worksite and Home Assessments
  • Employer Consultation
  • Vocational Interest Assessments
  • Training in Computer Programs that include:
    • Windows 95, 98 and XP
    • Microsoft Office 2000 and 2002
    • Internet training and email
    • Speech output programs such as JAWS and WindowEyes
    • Screen reading programs such as Kurzweil and Open Book Ruby
    • Magnification programs such as ZoomText and MaGic
    • Keyboard training
