Your Indiana Tax Return Line By Line
Refer to this graphic and the corresponding line list on the left to fill out your Indiana tax forms. Automatically download your Form IT-40 form.

Line 1 - Start with your AGI
The Indiana tax return begins with your adjusted gross income, or AGI, from line 11 of your federal Form 1040 or 1040-SR.
Line 2 – Add Backs
Although most of the expenses and deductions used to figure your federal taxes are allowed on your Indiana tax return, some need to be “added back” to calculate the correct income used to figure Indiana income tax due. Learn more here.
Line 4 – Deductions
Make sure you include Schedule 2 when claiming any of these deductions.
Line 6 – Exemptions
If you are married and filing jointly with your spouse, enter $2,000 on this line. Otherwise, enter $1,000 for each dependent. Important: Enter $1,000 on this line even if you are claimed on someone else’s return. Make sure you include Schedule 3 when claiming any of these exemptions.
Line 9 – County Tax
Use Schedule CT-40 to figure your county tax. Include the form with your return.
Line 10 – Other Taxes
If you purchased items while you were outside of Indiana through the mail, the purchases may be subject to Indiana taxes. Start with Schedule 4.

Line 12 – Credits
Enter any Individual Tax Credits on Schedule 5 and be sure to include it with your filing. Most first-time filers will also need to fill out and include Schedule IN-W to claim their credits.
