In 1851, the Indiana General Assembly passed an act to "encourage agriculture" creating the State Board of Agriculture. One of the Board's first actions was to create a state architectural fair. The first fair was held in 1852, and since 1892, has been located at its current site along 38th Street in Indianapolis.
The DNR Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology participates in the annual state fair in a variety of ways, most notably through the architectural history trolley tours. Explore this StoryMap to learn more about the history of the Indiana State Fair, and about its buildings past and present
