At DCS, we fully recognize that supporting our employees is vital to ensuring that the children and families involved in the child welfare system are well served. That is why our most critical area of focus is our staff. Child welfare can be stressful, but every office finds healthy outlets and takes time to have some fun with colleagues. From softball games to scavenger hunts, each office finds creative ways to get to know their team and give back to their local community.

Training and Professional Development

DCS promotes the development of a team-centered culture that supports continues learning. Employees complete continuous training to keep up-to-date on changes in DCS policy or procedure. DCS implements numerous strategies to ensure an employee’s well-being, while also serving vulnerable populations.

Child Welfare Scholars Program

In 2001, DCS partnered with Indiana University (IU) School of Social Work to develop the Child Welfare Scholars Program, which allows permanent full-time DCS employees to earn their Master’s degree in Social Work (MSW).

If selected to the program, students pursue their MSW through Indiana University. After graduation, MSW students repay their scholarship funding by continuing to work for DCS. The payback time required is determined by the number of months DCS paid for their tuition. Typically, MSW graduates fulfill their commitment to DCS within three years after they graduate.

Robust Leadership Training Platform
Through a partnership with the Indiana University School of Social Work, DCS offers two programs to develop management and leadership skills: the Child Welfare Management Innovations Institute and Leadership Academy.

Employee Recognition Program

The DCS Employee Recognition Bonus Program is designed to reward employees, at all levels, by recognizing exceptional performance and outcomes related to the DCS mission, vision and values.

Nominations are under three categories: Team Player Award, Rock Star Award,and Champion for Hoosier Children Award. Learn more

Mentor/ Peer Coach Bonus Program
The program is designed to reward successful Family Case Manager Field Mentor and Peer Coaches to recognize their efforts to support new Family Case Managers in their professional development and new worker learning processes.
