Standard Field Sobriety Test

The Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) Instructor Development Course is a comprehensive instructor course. It’s five days and designed to impart the student-instructor with the knowledge and skills for instructing the SFST Course. The course does not solely focus on teaching SFSTs. The course concentrates on effective general teaching skills then incorporates the SFST curriculum. The 40 hours of classroom training include, but are not limited to, the following subjects: concepts of adult learning and teaching; teaching techniques; basic public speaking; effective classroom presentations; standardized field sobriety testing curriculum; drugs that impair driving curriculum; managing a live alcohol workshop and student instructor presentations of SFST curriculum sessions.

Students should be selected from your agency who are specifically assigned to combating the impaired driver. Students are required to have previous training in SFSTs consistent with NHTSA standards. Additionally, students should possess a high level of proficiency and an active interest in instructing other officers in becoming proficient in the application of SFSTs. Students must have completed the Basic Standardized Field Sobriety Course prior to be able to attend the instructor course. A proficiency performance exam will be administered on the first day of the course.

Note: To maintain our good standing with NHTSA, we comply with their standards for match contribution. For this, we use state funded projects including SFST Instructor Development Courses for Match. Following completion of training each student is required to submit a paystub for documentation purposes.
