Interpreter Request

The Indiana BMV allows an applicant for a driver’s license to use a foreign language interpreter to interpret the knowledge exam if the applicant speaks a language not already offered by the BMV.

Spoken language interpreters are not available if the knowledge exam is already offered in the requested language.

We are excited to announce we now offer the French Creole/Haitian Creole and Swahili knowledge exams in audio upon request at every branch during normal business hours. You will NOT need an interpreter and will need to take the exam in the audio format for these languages moving forward.

The BMV currently offers the knowledge exam in the following languages:

American Sign Language عربي (Arabic)မြန်မာ (Burmese) Chin Hrvatski (Croatian)
Français (French)Deutsch (German)Kreyòl ayisyen (Haitian Creole)हिंदी (Hindi)日本語 (Japanese)
한국인 (Korean)普通话 (Mandarin - Simplified Chinese) Polski (Polish)ਪੰਜਾਬੀ (Punjabi)Русский (Russian)
Српски (Serbian)Español (Spanish)Kiswahili (Swahili)TagalogTiếng Việt (Vietnamese)

How to Request the Use of an Interpreter for a Knowledge Exam

To request a foreign language interpreter, please schedule an appointment online.

  • Make appointments online from your mobile device or computer.
  • Appointments are for individuals that need to use an interpreter for knowledge examinations when the applicant speaks a language the BMV does not have translated.

Schedule an Appointment

The BMV does not provide applicants with a foreign language interpreter; this service must be arranged by the applicant. Also, the interpreter must be willing to sign an affidavit after the test is completed stating the interpreter gave no unauthorized assistance to the applicant.

If you do not have a credential with the BMV, you must visit a branch to get a record created. Ensure you have the necessary documents before visiting a branch.

Please note:

  • Any single interpreter can only perform two translations per day for two unique customers.
  • Any single interpreter can only work with one customer at a time.
  • Any one customer can only have one interpreter per exam.
