Office of the Indiana Attorney General

A properly run nonprofit organization must focus on accomplishing its mission within a complex regulatory environment. Besides the many legal issues impacting all organizations, whether for-profit or nonprofit, nonprofits also typically operate within two additional legal frameworks - state charity law and federal tax law. The complexity of these frameworks can be difficult to navigate. This site contains resources to help understand and navigate them.

This site is organized to correspond with the three primary periods of a nonprofit's lifecycle - Formation, Operation, and Dissolution. As we continue to develop this site we will add resources, so be sure to check back often.

The information on this site is provided for informational purposes only. While every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of this information, in the event any information presented conflicts with applicable law, the law applies. The Attorney General encourages anyone forming, operating, or otherwise acting for or on behalf of a nonprofit organization to seek qualified professional advice. The Indiana Attorney General's Office protects the public's interest by ensuring that nonprofits and charitable organizations operating in Indiana are meeting their legal responsibilities.

For the past 5 years, the Office of the Indiana Attorney General has partnered with SAVI at the IUPUI Polis Center and the Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives (now Serve Indiana) to host a conference dedicated to nonprofit and community service professionals.  Our goal is to build the capacity of nonprofit organizations and to provide guidance on important governance issues.  This year's conference is scheduled for October 1 and 2 at the IUPUI Campus Center.
