[r21] Hoosier Homestead Awards recognize rich agricultural heritage

Entry Description
STATEHOUSE — State Representative Tim Wesco (R-Osceola) congratulates the Mishler Farm of Elkhart County for receiving the Hoosier Homestead Award. The award was presented by Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann and Agriculture Director Ted McKinney at the Indiana Statehouse on Thursday.

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes families with farms that have been owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more. The Mishler Farm, located in New Paris, has been in operation since 1913. They received the centennial award.

“Farming requires a tremendous amount of hard work,” said Rep. Wesco. “The Mishler Farm deserves our applause for their dedication and determination to preserving this operation and passing it down from generation to generation.”

The program began in 1976 to acknowledge the contributions these families have made to Indiana agriculture. More than 5,000 farms have been recognized since the program was established.

Two awards ceremonies are held each year, in the spring and summer, to commemorate the achievements of the many outstanding Hoosier farmers across the state.

“Agriculture plays an enormous and vital role in the economy of our state,” said Rep. Wesco. “It is truly amazing that this family has maintained their farm for such a long time. I wish them continued success over the next 100 years.”
