[r89] Rep. Kirchhofer bill to build more efficient workplaces signed by governor
Start Date: 4/8/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 4/8/2014
Entry Description
Today, House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1045 authored by State Representative Cindy Kirchhofer (R-Beech Grove) was signed by the governor at the Statehouse. This law revises the definition of the practice of occupational therapy (OT) in order to increase communication in the medical field.

“I am pleased to see this piece of legislation signed into law,” said Rep. Kirchhofer. “This law updates and reflects the current practices for occupational therapists within organizations today while creating a better line of communication between professionals.”

This law will require an OT that evaluates a patient who has a condition that may need medical attention, to refer that patient to a qualified physician. This modernizes the law due to the vast cooperation that takes place between nurses, speech language pathologists (SLPs), and OTs to both diagnose and treat a patient. With the updated language, HEA 1045 will increase the collaboration between OTs and SLPs by allowing more open communication about educational and teaching techniques.

“The definition of occupational therapists has not been updated in 23 years. My goal was to bring the language up-to–date, so the medical workplace can become more connected, more efficient and ultimately lead to more personalized treatment plans. HEA 1045 will better align the OT practices with others across the country,” said Rep. Kirchhofer.
