Entry Description

STATEHOUSE — State Representatives Mark Messmer (R-Jasper) and Lloyd Arnold (R-Leavenworth) congratulate the Rothert Farm of Dubois County for receiving the Hoosier Homestead Award. Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann and Agriculture Director Ted McKinney presented the award at the Indiana Statehouse on Thursday.

The Hoosier Homestead Award Program recognizes families with farms that have been owned and maintained by the same family for 100 years or more. The Rothert Farm has been in operation since 1907. Applicant Jeff Rothert resides in Washington, Ind., however the family farm is located in Huntingburg. The family was recognized for their hard work and commitment to agriculture.

“Maintaining a farm for more than a century is not an easy feat, and it shows a steadfast commitment to the state of Indiana,” said Rep. Messmer. “Like many other small businesses, this farm has probably experienced highs as well as lows, and the fact that they have made it this far deserves to be praised.”

The program began in 1976 to acknowledge the contributions these families have made to Indiana agriculture. More than 5,000 farms have been recognized since the program was established.

Two awards ceremonies are held each year, in the spring and summer, to commemorate the achievements of the many outstanding Hoosier farmers across the state.

“I want to congratulate the Rothert family on their award and praise them for their hard work and perseverance in operating the farm,” said Rep. Arnold. “It’s family farmers, like the Rotherts that are the backbone of Indiana’s economy so I am glad to see this family recognized for their dedication to feeding Hoosiers and growing Indiana’s agriculture industry.”
