[R67] Rep. Frye authors bill concerning career education centers
Start Date: 3/5/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 3/5/2014
Entry Description
State Representative Randy Frye (R-Greensburg) authored House Bill 1181 to grant more funds to career and technical education centers. The bill passed the Senate yesterday with a unanimous vote.

HB 1181 provides that a cooperative career and technical education center may receive an advance from the Common School Fund. This bill will impact five cooperatives across the state and will allow them to make necessary improvements. These co-op centers are an important part of the communities they serve as they often team up with local manufacturing companies to educate future workers.

“This simply allows the cooperatives across the state access to the same funds that every other school has access to,” said Rep. Frye. “I am proud to say that our district is home to one of these co-ops, the Southeastern Career Center in Versailles, which is operated by a cooperative of five area schools. Due to a lack of construction money, this 1960s building has gone without upgrading. Now, they will finally be able to make the necessary improvements.”

HB 1181 also allows career and technical education centers to receive grants from the Indiana Safe Schools Fund. The Department of Education has said in the past that co-op centers are not recognized entities and are therefore not eligible for these grants.

“Again, this is about leveling the playing-field,” said Rep. Frye. “Students should not be at a disadvantage in terms of safety simply because they attend a co-op school. When it comes to the ability to employ a school resource officer, conduct threat assessments of school buildings or purchase safety equipment and technology, all of our state’s students deserve to be safe.”

The bill will now go back to the House for concurrence.
