[r23] Friend Report: All things considered
Start Date: 2/21/2014 All Day
End Date: 2/21/2014
Entry Description
All things considered

This job allows many opportunities to do public appearances and make presentations.  On Saturday the 15th, I presented a check to Miami County Helping Hands from Miller’s Merry Manor for the Sweetie Contest.  This contest elects a king and queen from the residents of the facility, and they are always folks in their 80’s and 90’s.  After the winners were announced, I went to the winners and congratulated them.  The winners were Ms. Dodie Decker and Jonesy Jones.

I told Jonesy how proud I was of him, and he said, “Who the heck are you!”  That response gives me a real dose of humility.  His son was beside him, and he said, “Dad, you voted for this man!”  We had a good laugh, and all in all, it was a great event.  We raised about $1,600 for the Helping Hands food pantry in Peru.

I want everyone to know that I am working hard on tax policy that helps Peru and the rest of the district.  School funding and business personal property tax considerations are on the front burner, and we are having serious conversations.  It all depends on negotiations between the House and Senate financial committees.  There are significant differences between both chambers, and we also listen to the administration’s concerns.  My goal is that a proper result can emerge from all the discussions.

We got a delivery of LP gas this week for a price of $4.08 a gallon.  Once again, I want to complain about the price because it is not the supplier, but the origin of this price gouge.  There are so many consumers on fixed incomes that can’t handle the exorbitant costs to heat their homes.  Any relief we can provide would be welcomed.

I am very much in favor of giving some additional funding to highway construction and maintenance.  Jobs are created almost immediately for our constituents when highway contracts are let.  If we can get the contractors to work, our local economy can improve.

I introduced HB 1132 that would allow sewage collections to have the same ability to petition the IURC as the potable water distribution systems.  It makes sense to me that the collection of sewage should have the same requirements as a distribution system.  After water is sent out to the public, it needs to be collected after the public uses it.

I know we are all tired of this winter, snow and cold temperatures.  Let’s all congratulate the workers who keep us moving.  The people who deliver, plow snow and provide service should get a huge “thank you.”

This winter reminds us older folks of winters past.  We have lived through worse, but I am sure the school officials are doing their best to make the proper decisions.

More later,

Bill Friend
