RELEASE: Local roads funding proposal blocked along party lines
Start Date: 2/25/2014 All Day
End Date: 2/25/2014
Entry Description

INDIANAPOLIS—A proposal that would have injected $25 million into local roads coffers was shut down along party lines Tuesday afternoon. The amendment, authored by State Senator Tim Skinner (D-Terre Haute) and brought to the Senate floor by Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane (D-Anderson), would have made a local infrastructure grant fund available to local governments using balances from the Major Moves trust fund.

“We regularly hear complaints from constituents about failing infrastructure – paved roads returned to gravel and aging bridges,” said Sen. Lanane. “What we’re trying to do here is give local leaders more options for funding those improvements.”

Proposed as an amendment to House Bill (HB) 1002 which authorizes the State Budget Agency to transfer funds from the state’s General Fund to the Major Moves 2020 Trust Fund, the measure would have reverted the language back to the original version passed overwhelmingly by both parties in the House of Representatives.

According to the American Society of Civil Engineers, poor road conditions cost Hoosier Motorists $1.24 billion per year in extra vehicle repairs and operating costs, and Indiana received a D+ in the report grading the state’s infrastructure as a whole.

“I think most of us see the need for these resources at the local level,” continued Sen  Lanane. “It is my hope that by the end of this legislative session we can bring everyone on board and pass some meaningful legislation that will help our communities back home.”

Sen. Lanane represents Indiana Senate District 25 includes the portions of Madison and Delaware counties, including the City of Muncie and the southeastern portion of the City of Anderson.
