Rep. Karickhoff supports extending address privacy for federal judges
Start Date: 2/25/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 2/25/2014
Entry Description
STATEHOUSE –House Bill (HB) 1178 co-authored by State Rep. Mike Karickhoff (R-Kokomo) has passed through both chambers of the Indiana General Assembly.

HB 1178 makes a technical correction for the definition of “judge” to include current and former federal judges for the purpose of allowing their address to be protected from the general public for safety purposes.

“All Hoosiers should feel safe in their own homes,” said Rep. Karickhoff. “Protecting the whereabouts of vulnerable individuals and their families is an easy step that will potentially keep them out of danger.”

Currently, House Enrolled Act 1219 – enacted in the 2013 legislative session –permits a local unit of government that publishes a public website containing names and addresses of property owners to restrict access to the names and addresses of law enforcement officers, victims of domestic violence, and judges.

“The barrier between the general public and the addresses of law enforcement is a simple but an effective safety precaution,” Rep Karickhoff said. “The information will be guarded from those who wish to do these individuals harm but will be accessible to those who prove to have good intentions.”

State Rep. Mike Karickhoff serves as Budget Subcommittee Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee and on the Natural Resources Committee.  He is also the vice-chair of the Indiana Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations. Rep. Karickhoff represents portions of Howard and Grant counties, most of the city of Kokomo and the towns of Swayzee and Greentown.
