Start Date: 1/16/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 1/16/2014
Entry Description
State Representative Mark Messmer honored the 2013 state champion Barr-Reeve High School girls volleyball team in a resolution on Thursday, January 16th at the Statehouse.

“Excellence in athletics is achieved through dedication and determination,” said Rep. Messmer. “The Barr-Reeve High School volleyball team displayed outstanding perseverance as they led their school to victory, and I am proud to be able to honor them today at the Statehouse for their distinct accomplishment.”

Rep. Messmer was joined in the House chamber by the volleyball team, their coach Amber DeCoursey, assistant coaches Mike James and Kerri Boyd as well as Superintendent Travis Madison.

The Barr-Reeve Vikings defeated Lafayette Central Catholic 3-1. The team gained the school’s first Class A state championship after a 38-2 season record. The victory marked their fourth win over a top six ranked opponent in their last matches and was the team’s fifth appearance in the volleyball state finals.

Leading the team to victory was Barr-Reeve graduate and 14 year coach, Amber DeCoursey. As a student in the mid 1990s, DeCoursey was a standout basketball and volleyball player. As a coach, DeCoursey also achieved state championship runner-up status in 1998, 2001 and 2008.

The Vikings were led by Hania Sisco with 19 point-scoring spike attacks, or kills, Tiara Kenny converting on 10 kills, Jenna Knepp with an impressive 36 assists and Hannah Bullock with a record of 40 digs.

Senior, and team captain, Jenna Knepp was named as the winner of the Class A Mental Attitude Award by the Indiana High School Athletic Association Executive Committee. The award honors players who excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in volleyball. Jenna was also named to the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association Class A First Team for her efforts.

“This accomplishment means so much more than a trophy,” said Rep. Messmer. “It is a symbol of all of their hard work, their countless hours of practice, the friendships they have created and their pride in the community they represent. I want to congratulate everyone who played a role in this achievement and thank them for making the journey to the Statehouse this morning.”
