[DCS] Jasper Co. DCS Recruiting Foster Parents: Informational Meeting in Wheatfield Jan. 15
Start Date: 1/8/2014Start Time: 12:00 AM
End Date: 1/8/2014
Entry Description

WHEATFIELD, Ind. (Jan. 8, 2014)—The Jasper County office of the Indiana Department of Child Services (DCS) is looking for some adults with a strong desire to invest in the future. These selfless caregivers will provide temporary supervision and stability for foster children during a challenging time in the children’s lives. A short informational meeting for these prospective foster parents is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 15 in Wheatfield.

“When relatives are not available to care for a child that has been abused or neglected, we rely on committed foster parents who are ready and willing to step up and temporarily help a child in need,” said Sharon Mathew, director of the Jasper County DCS office. “We particularly need more foster homes within our own community so children don’t experience additional changes such as moving to a new school. When the child is with a local foster family, it makes spending time with their parents easier, too. And when services are needed, it allows us to utilize local service providers.”

Foster parents can be stay-at-home parents or they can work outside the home. They may rent or own their own house, apartment or condominium, as long as it meets safety standards. Besides providing food and shelter, they assist with practical needs like helping with visits with the child’s family, taking them to any needed therapy sessions, medical and other appointments and ensuring there are extra-curricular activities.

Local foster parents are especially needed so school-age children removed from their homes can continue to attend their own school and maintain contact with their friends.

The informational meeting will be led by a foster care specialist from the Jasper County DCS office. Topics include foster parent responsibilities as well as the general licensing requirements including the home study. In addition, a licensed foster parent will be on hand to answer questions. A willingness to step up and help a child in need is the most important prerequisite for becoming a foster parent.

The meeting will begin at 4:30 pm at the Wheatfield Library, 350 South Bierma in Wheatfield. Light refreshments will be served and the meeting is expected to last approximately 30 minutes. Those unable to attend the 4:30 meeting may stop by any time before 7 pm to receive information and ask questions about fostering.

Following the meeting, training for new foster parents will be offered at the same location from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm.

There are more than 4,600 abused or neglected Hoosier children statewide currently living in non-relative foster homes because it is unsafe for them to live in their own homes. In Jasper and the surrounding counties of Benton, Lake, LaPorte, Newton, Porter, Pulaski, Starke and White counties, 921 abused or neglected children live in foster homes.
