[ILEA] Basic Police Observer/Sniper Course # 201416
Start Date: 4/7/2014Start Time: 8:00 AM
End Date: 4/11/2014End Time: 5:00 AM
Entry Description
This five-day course is being presented by the Indiana law Enforcement Academy in conjunction with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.  It is designed for police officers and their supervisors assigned the responsibility of Observer/Sniper functions in police crisis situations.  Instruction will be provided in the concept and utilization of Observer/Sniper Teams, equipment and training needs, technical instruction in ballistics, rifles, optics, and ammunition.  Attendees will be given expert coaching in advanced and long-range shooting skills.

Attendees are required to bring assigned departmental weapons* optics** and related equipment, plus 450 rounds of ammunition*** per officer, minimum.  Additionally, each team should have a 20X power spotter score, shooting mat or rug remnant, rifle jacket or elbow pads, cleaning equipment, canteen or cooler (due to limited breaks), short bi-pod for weapon, and a sandbag the size of a pair of socks.  Students should also have eye protection, ear protection, knee pads, and work gloves.  Everything should be portable in one trip.  Data books will be provided.

Housing, course notebook, logbook, handouts, and facility usage fee are included in the tuition costs.

ILEA Cost:  $450.00 for Indiana Residents
                   $480.00 for Out-of- State Residents
Inservice Credit:  25 hours

Tuition is to be paid by brining a claim voucher, purchase order, or check when reporting for the first day of training.

*Rifles must be capable of firing a 1 minute of angle group (that is a 1" group at 100 yards, 2" group at 200 yards) and have sufficient mounts to insure the score maintains accuracy from shot to shot.

**Experience has shown that scopes with positive click adjustments work the best, as opposed to those scopes with friction ring adjustments.  Scopes should be a minimum of 7X power, with 10X and 12X power recommended.

***Ammunition should be premium or match grade quality.

NOTE:  Rifles such as the AR-15, M-16, M-14 and Sporter types have proven to be inadequate for this type of precision shooting.  Those rifles with heavy barrels, or match grade (glass bedded-floated barrels) have provided the best results.

If a department needs to cancel a student from an ILEA inservice class, it must be done no later than five (5) working days prior to the start of the class.  If a student does not show up or cancellation is made any closer to the start of the class the agency will be responsible for payment in full for this class.

Reporting Instructions will be mailed at a later date.
