On September 16, 2014, the BMV announced that it had determined that some Hoosier’s vehicles were misclassified for excise tax purposes. As a result, those customers overpaid excise taxes when registering their vehicles. About 185,000, or 3.6 percent, of the 5.1 million Hoosiers who registered vehicles with the BMV since 2004 are entitled to refunds. Everyone eligible for a refund will receive a claim form in the mail.

However, if you would like to check to see if you are eligible for a refund or you would like to print out a claim form, you can do that on this website.

On our secure site, please enter your name and either your driver’s license number or your social security number. To check if your business is eligible for a refund, please enter your Federal Identification Number. This allows our system to check the database to see if you are entitled to a refund.

If you are entitled to a refund, you will be directed to a page where you will be able to print a claim form. It will also instruct you on how to submit your claim. If you are not eligible for a refund, you will receive confirmation that your vehicle was not one of the ones misclassified.

Refund claims will take approximately 30 days to process from the time the BMV received your claim form.
